Drumduan is an alternative independent school for girls and boys based Forres. Founded in 2013, and growing from the local Steiner school is sits on the Moray coast and offers its unique educational experience to children from birth.
The school’s ethos is based on the work of Rudolf Steiner. It emphasis is on meeting the needs of the growing child in a healthy, balanced and creative way. Experiential learning is an important part of the curriculum, as well as multi-sensory approaches and a focus on lifelong learning that supports individual development. The school aims to provide educational experiences that promote meaning, purpose and independence.
Drumduan caters for children from birth until children turn 19; beginning with mother and toddler groups. Children entering a slightly more formalised educational setting at age 3 in the Kindergarten. Lower school is entered at age 6 where core subjects are introduced along Steiner educational and non-competitive principles. Children move to the upper school at age 13, where the main inspiration comes from the Forrest Schools movement, Democratic schools and Steiner. There is no formalised testing, or exam setting at any stage of education within the school, and voluntary service on the community is a central part of the approach. Study and core subject learning is enhanced by movement, music, crafts and artistic work, along with outdoor activities.
