Atlantic College located in the Vale of Glamorgan is an independent United World College (UWC) for pupils aged 14 to 19. It is a multi-cultural school to the core and hosts students from over 90 countries within its current roll.
Unlike other independent schools Atlantic College actively tries to create a learning environment which doesn’t strictly follow the UK national curriculum. There are two qualifications that pupils at the college work towards, the first being the ‘Atlantic pre-Diploma of Cambridge IGCSES’. The second qualification is known as the ‘Atlantic Diploma’ which consists of the International Baccalaureate mixed with other extracurricular activities. The school’s curriculum is focused to ensure that students are taught how to think independently and approach problems intelligently, rather than simply getting prepared to pass examinations.
As the school follows the International Baccalaureate the curriculum in general is widely different to most schools in the country. This is arguably a much better preparation for further education; as there is a higher focus on independent thought and interpretation of learning material. One critical part of the IB is a theory of knowledge module, which focuses on the interpretation of information and develops analytical skills.
