Ihsan academy is a mixed day school based in Cardiff, Wales. Founded in 2013, it provides for children from the Islamic community from the age of 3. Ihsan is derived from the Arabic word ‘ahsana’ which means ‘doing things better’ and this lays at the heart of the school’s aims and ethos. Religion is at the core of everything that is done at the school, and prayer, remembrance of Allah, and supplication are an important part of the daily routine of the school. Ihsan’s ethos is focused on the teachings of Islam and it provides an education that nurtures and develops all children to live fulfilling and righteous lives.

The Academy has very small class sizes, with lots of opportunities for one to one teaching and learning; all within mixed aged classes. At GCSE children are educated in single sex classes and have the opportunity to learn Urdu and citizenship, in addition to the subject areas they have been learning since starting at the academy.

Learning within the early years’ is designed to instil a love for learning, while providing the vital skills needed for later life, including confidence and independence. Movement into the main school from early years’ is a seamless process, and teaching in years one and two aims to build on the skills that have already been established. All core subjects, along with creative and physical development are taught, alongside religious studies, Arabic and further study of the Quran. As children enter year three these subjects continue, embedded alongside a greater understanding of the Islamic faith, and understanding of the Quran. At year 7 boys and girls are split and taught separately for the remainder of their time at the academy. However, they are both offered a varied and challenging curriculum that continues to build on the skills and knowledge they have already developed.
