Cargilfield is a mixed day and boarding school based in Edinburgh. Founded by Reverend Charles Darnell in 1873, the school moved from Trinity in Edinburgh to its current location in Barnton in 1898. The pre-prep and nursery departments were added in the 1980’s around the same time as girls were first admitted to the school. The school sits in its own large self-contained and picturesque grounds next to Bruntsfield golf course, and caters for boys and girls from the age of 3.
The school focuses on developing confidence, lively minds, secure values and a strong sense of identity, alongside community spirit. Cargilfield aims to achieve this by providing a broad and challenging education in a supportive environment. The aim of the school since its inception has been to provide a liberal education, while teaching the merits of hard work and honest, with a focus on happiness and wellbeing.
There are currently more than 300 boys and girls aged between 3 and 13 attending the school. Children are educated in small classes of between 14 and 16 children, with no class containing more than 18 children. Cargilfield has 100% success rate with children taking either the Common Entrance or Academic Scholarship exam, and all children that attend the school are entered for the exam towards the end of their time at Cargilfield. Over the past five years’ children from the school have gone on to attend some of the top secondary schools in the UK
