Belhaven Hill is a day and boarding prep school for boys and girls based in Dunbar, Scotland. The school was founded in 1923, and sits in a large natural estate in Dunbar, East Lothian. The school caters for children from age 7 for day education, and children generally don’t begin boarding until they are 9. The school has a broadly Christian ethos and its core values include curiosity, courteousness, ambition, change, confidence, and individuality. The Belhaven approach is to ‘Be Belhaven’ – which includes be ready, be outdoors, and be those core values that are central to the school.
There are currently around 125 students on roll and around two thirds of them are full time boarders. Children from Belhaven Hill go on to some of the best senior schools in the UK including Eton, Fettes, Oundle and Glenalmond. All children in their final year sit either the Common Entrance exam, or for an academic scholarship for the top senior schools in Scotland and England.
Belhaven Hill follows a combination of the Curriculum for Excellence and the English National Curriculum. Subjects covered include the core curriculum of English, mathematics and science; with foreign languages, religious studies, humanities and Information technology all also being included along with a full sports programme. There is support for children with additional needs, and the school prides itself on being non-selective and on having close ties with the local community.
