Basil Patterson is a middle school based in the centre of Edinburgh. Recently founded it caters for boys and girls from the age of 14. Students wishing to continue in a similar environment post 16 can transfer to the school’s sister college Basil Patterson Tutorial College.
Basil Patterson is a small school whose ethos is based on the belief that the more time each child spends with their teacher the more they can achieve. Central to this is the provision of a rigorous academic curriculum with a strong focus on examination success, combined with a commitment to the development of each student as a learner and an individual. The school values focus on positivity, potential, ambition, respect, integrity, and flexibility.
There are currently just five children on roll, and classes and teaching methods are set up for no more than 11 children in a class. This approach allows for individualised learning programs to be tailored to the needs of each student in the class. The first year of students that went forward to GCSE produced an 86% success rate at Grades A* to C. Subjects studied include English language and literature, maths, science. Psychology, media, history and general studies.
